Carroll Group Expands Fleet with Nine Euro 6 MAN TGX Prime Movers
Driving Safety, Efficiency, and Sustainability Across Australia
Carroll Group has reinforced its commitment to safety, fuel efficiency, and environmental responsibility with the addition of nine Euro 6 MAN TGX prime movers to its growing fleet.
The new trucks, sourced through long-standing partner Penske Australia, are being deployed on Performance-Based Standards (PBS) 30-metre pocket roadtrain routes, running daily between Brisbane, Roma, and Gladstone. With fully loaded trips both ways, the trucks are already proving their reliability and efficiency in demanding long-haul conditions.
A Move Towards a Cleaner, Safer Fleet
Managing Director Troy Carroll said the decision to invest in Euro 6 technology was both strategic and values-driven.
“We went to the MAN for the safety features such as crash detection, lane assist, and the suite of other systems available,” Carroll explained. “But also for the fuel economy and reduced fuel burn that comes with the Euro 6 Phase II engine. With this second series, emissions are extremely low.”
The investment aligns with Carroll Group’s sustainability goal of running an entirely Euro 6 fleet by the end of 2025, with Euro 5 units being phased out in the coming months.
Fuel Economy and Performance
Early performance data indicates the MAN TGXs are meeting expectations for fuel efficiency. Some units have reported fuel consumption as strong as 2.1 km per litre at HML maximum weights, placing them ahead of comparable Euro 5 models and even rival European brands.
The fleet additions include a range of 540hp, 580hp, and 640hp engines, with most trucks rated at 90 tonnes to meet PBS requirements. The more powerful 640hp models are rated up to 120 tonnes, offering the versatility needed for heavier combinations.
Strong Dealer Partnership
The trucks were supplied through Penske Brisbane, under the guidance of Sales Manager Jayme Deves. Carroll praised the dealership relationship, noting the importance of responsive service:
“That’s a really strong partnership for us. We don’t just buy trucks—we need support, and Jayme provides that. If anything goes wrong, I know it’ll be dealt with quickly. It’s one point of contact, and that makes all the difference.”
Driver Feedback: Comfort and Driveability
Feedback from drivers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the ride comfort, torque delivery, and cab design.
- Comfort: Drivers have praised the MAN’s air ride cab for its smooth handling, noting it avoids the “washing machine” motion sometimes experienced in other European brands.
- Power and Torque: The MAN TGX delivers strong pulling power under heavy loads, giving drivers confidence in acceleration and uphill performance.
- Safety Features: Lane assist, crash detection, and advanced driver assistance systems have been welcomed by operators as key safety enhancements.
“The drivers love how the MAN takes off with a load,” said Carroll. “The driveability is what they keep talking about. It’s smoother, stronger, and just a better ride overall.”
Expanding Linehaul Operations
The investment in new prime movers also supports Carroll Group’s growing interstate linehaul services. What began as a single weekly run has already expanded, with units now making multiple trips to Perth each week.
“Our rates are competitive because we’ve got freight coming back,” Carroll noted. “The service has taken off faster than expected, and the new trucks are playing a big role in that growth.”
