Carroll Group puts five new Krueger PBS A-doubles to work
As a fast-growing heavy transport operator based in Queensland, Carroll Group continues to focus on increasing fleet efficiency while cutting emissions across its national operations.
A key part of that strategy has involved acquiring new Performance-Based Standards (PBS) permits and investing in high-productivity vehicle combinations. These units, operating under Higher Mass Limits (HML), are helping to reduce the number of trips required—lowering the environmental footprint and boosting cost-effectiveness.
Most recently, Carroll Group has expanded its fleet with five new 30-metre Krueger A-double combinations, procured through long-standing partner The Brown and Hurley Group. These purpose-built trailers are delivering major operational advantages, including improved payload capacity, route access, and productivity gains.
Built to PBS Level 2 specifications and in line with the reference vehicle dimensions for key eastern states—Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria—the new units help minimise access issues across freight routes while maintaining flexibility in scheduling and operations.
Each combination is designed to carry up to 40 pallets (20 per trailer), representing a 17 per cent improvement over conventional B-doubles carrying 34 pallets. With GCM ratings of up to 85 tonnes, they also provide approximately 18 per cent higher payloads compared to standard tri-tri axle B-double setups.
A standout feature of these trailers is the recessed rear bumper design, which significantly enhances manoeuvrability—particularly through the dolly. While Krueger has previously applied this feature to its A-double skel trailers, this delivery marks the first time it’s been incorporated into its Kurtainer model, making the combination even more versatile.
These A-doubles are now working regular shuttle runs between Carroll Group’s Yatala depot and destinations in Gladstone and northern Queensland. Serving key sectors including mining, oil and gas, heavy projects, and logistics, the trailers join a growing fleet of Krueger assets already proving their reliability on the road.
“We’ve had a number of Krueger trailers in the fleet, and they’ve always been rock solid,” says Director Troy Carroll. “We run trucks all over Australia, so we can’t compromise on quality. These new trailers have been excellent since day one—no dramas at all.”
The rollout was made possible with significant input from The Brown and Hurley Group, Krueger’s main dealer. Faced with tight deadlines for a new contract late last year, Carroll Group needed fast turnaround and precise trailer specifications. The Brown and Hurley team worked through the holiday period to ensure everything was delivered on time.
“They were upfront and dependable the whole way through,” says Troy. “We’ve bought all our Kenworths through them, so we already had confidence in their team—and they didn’t let us down.”

The relationship between Krueger and The Brown and Hurley Group goes back to 2019. As family-owned businesses with shared values, the companies have built a strong alliance—one that benefits customers by combining quality manufacturing, responsive sales support, and industry knowledge.
“Not every operator needs A-doubles, but for Carroll Group, they’re a perfect fit,” says John Cole, Trailer Sales Manager at The Brown and Hurley Group. “We’re proud to support them with gear that ticks every box for their application.”
Krueger National Sales Manager, George Athanasi, says the close partnership helps ensure customers receive tailored solutions, not just trailers.
“When Brown and Hurley comes to us with a customer like Carroll Group, it’s more like working as one team,” George explains. “From initial specs through to delivery and aftersales, everything’s aligned to give customers real value and long-term support.”
