In the fast-moving, round-the-clock world of road freight, success depends on more than simply transporting goods. Reliability, efficiency, and safety are critical — especially when deliveries must reach every corner of the state.

For Victorian Freight Specialists (VFS), a leading freight carrier servicing metropolitan and regional Victoria, that mission is supported by a long-standing partnership with Isuzu Trucks.

The relationship is built on shared goals, operational trust, and a fleet designed to perform under demanding transport conditions.

Operating from Dandenong in Melbourne’s rapidly growing eastern corridor, VFS runs an intensive delivery schedule. The company transports a wide range of freight including pharmaceutical supplies, automotive components, hardware products and general freight throughout Victoria.

Reaching Far & Wide Across Victoria

With a fleet of around 150 company-owned vehicles and more than 200 subcontractors, Operations Director Chris Collins describes the pace of operations as relentless.

“Full on,” he says.

Meeting strict delivery timeframes is particularly important in sectors such as healthcare and critical supply chains.

“Our specialty is regional country Victoria,” Chris said.

“We carry to all parts, including the nooks and crannies. Getting freight to those far-reaching areas is challenging, but that’s where we really excel.”

Providing dependable statewide freight coverage requires a fleet that is versatile, durable, and compliant with modern safety standards.

Drivers at the Heart of the Operation

In today’s tight labour market, trucks alone are not enough to ensure success. The people behind the wheel remain the most valuable asset.

VFS places strong emphasis on attracting and retaining skilled drivers, making driver support a central part of its business strategy.

“Quality people is probably the key factor for us,” Chris acknowledges.

As a long-established, family-operated business, VFS believes its culture plays a key role in driver retention. Drivers deal directly with ownership and operate within a close-knit team environment that values professionalism and attention to detail.

Providing well-equipped vehicles also plays a role in driver satisfaction, helping create a safe and comfortable working environment.

That’s where Isuzu Trucks comes into the picture.

A Long-Standing Partnership

VFS has built a strong relationship with Ballarat Isuzu — multiple-time winners of Isuzu Trucks’ Dealer of the Year award.

The partnership provides both equipment reliability and operational support.

“Ballarat Isuzu have an in-depth understanding of my business,” Chris said.

“I can lean on them, put pressure on them when I need equipment, and I know they’re going to be there. It’s a great relationship and a great partnership.”

Fleet Manager Glenn Haines oversees vehicle procurement, telematics integration, and maintenance across the extensive fleet. For him, Isuzu’s wide model range provides the flexibility required to match different freight tasks.

“We probably have 30 Isuzu trucks overall,” Glenn notes.

“As our customer base grew, we had a growing need for smaller trucks, so we’ve gone from the 6 to 8-tonne, right up to the bigger models. Their massive range really does help with what we do here.”

The Latest Addition: Isuzu NQR 88/80-190

One of the newest vehicles joining the VFS fleet is the Isuzu NQR 88/80-190, fitted with a Pantech body and tail-lift. The light-duty truck provides the efficiency and reliability needed for both metro and regional freight tasks.

With a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 8,800 kilograms (or an optional 8,000 kg configuration for the 190 PS variant) and a Gross Combination Mass (GCM) of 12,300 kg, the truck offers strong payload capability while remaining agile enough for urban deliveries.

Power comes from Isuzu’s 4HK1-TCC Euro VI engine, producing 140 kW and 513 Nm of torque — ideal for demanding last-mile logistics.

The truck also includes a range of safety and driver assistance systems designed to improve road safety and reduce fatigue.

Safety Technology That Drivers Value

Modern safety technology has become an important factor for fleet operators and drivers alike.

The MY25 NQR includes a suite of advanced safety features such as:

  • Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Driver Attention Alert

These technologies support safer driving while reducing stress during long regional routes.

“We’ve noticed in the last two to three years all the safety features coming in,” said Glenn.

“Isuzu has a lot of that safety stuff in there… which helps the drivers immensely.”

Driver feedback is also actively incorporated into fleet decisions.

“Our drivers are really happy with the Isuzus,” Glenn reported.

“If the drivers need something for their country runs, we make sure they have it. Things like seat covers, cameras…comforts in the cab.”

The result is a working environment that prioritises safety, comfort and long-term driver retention.

VFS also relies on Isuzu’s broader dealer network across Victoria — including Geelong, Ballarat and Wodonga — to maintain service compliance and maximise vehicle uptime.

Strengthening Victoria’s Freight Network

Looking ahead, VFS is focused on refining its operations rather than expanding aggressively.

“We stay with what we’re good at,” Chris explained.

The company’s future plans centre on strengthening regional depot partnerships and continuing to raise customer service standards.

In an industry driven by reliability, precision and people, the partnership between VFS and Isuzu represents more than a simple supplier relationship.

It’s a collaboration that supports operational efficiency while giving drivers the tools they need to perform their jobs safely and effectively.

Through this approach, VFS continues to ensure that even the most remote ‘nook and cranny’ of Victoria stays connected to the state’s freight network.
