From hauling construction materials to distributing fresh produce, trucks are the lifeblood of Australia’s supply chain—especially outside the major cities. Smaller operators like Canberra-based P & G Trucking are vital players in ensuring deliveries reach even the most regional customers. In 2022–2023 alone, Australia moved over 241.8 billion tonne-kilometres of freight by road.

While many transport companies rely solely on heavy-duty trucks, P & G Trucking has taken a more flexible approach. Their heavy prime movers are reserved for long-haul trips between Young and Brisbane, while Isuzu’s NLR 45-150 Traypacks handle the crucial last-mile deliveries around the ACT and regional centres.

Founded in 2018, the company has grown steadily, with depots in Canberra, Young, and Brisbane. It’s a tight-knit family business run by Paul Smithers, who handles the interstate hauls, and Gemma Smithers, who manages operations and drives one of the Traypacks five days a week.

“Our Traypacks are the unsung heroes of our fleet,” says Gemma. “They’re out making the bulk of our customer deliveries—small loads like paint, electrical gear, and tyres—fast and fuss-free.”

The two medium wheelbase NLR 45-150 Traypacks take care of about 80% of local drop-offs, thanks to their easy handling, generous tray size, and payload capacity—all usable on a standard car licence.

With a 4,500 kg GVM, 2,135 kg payload, and 4,000 kg towing limit, the Traypack hits the sweet spot between utility and accessibility. Powered by Isuzu’s 4JJ1-TCS 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine and paired with a five-speed MYY-5T manual transmission, it offers a smooth yet capable ride for urban and regional deliveries alike.

“The first time I drove it, I loved it,” Gemma recalls. “It handled weight like a champ and just felt built for what we do.”

The addition of custom signage from Signlime Signage Canberra completed the professional look.

Built for Safety and Simplicity

As part of Isuzu’s Ready-to-Work range, the Traypack is equipped with factory-fitted essentials—no aftermarket modifications needed. A heavy-duty aluminium tray, removable drop sides, load restraint points, and a reversing camera all come standard.

On the road, Isuzu’s ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) adds peace of mind with Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Emergency Braking.

“Everything is practical and well thought-out,” says Gemma. “The load anchor points are especially useful, and even after a long day, it’s easy to climb in and out of the cab.”

Driven to Grow

Fleet presentation and reliability are non-negotiables for Paul and Gemma. Their trucks are cleaned regularly and serviced through Canberra Isuzu, which helped them get started with the Traypack trial.

“We depend on these vehicles to deliver not just freight, but trust,” says Gemma. “That means regular maintenance and high standards.”

Looking ahead, the duo hopes to expand their regional service and invest in more equipment. On a personal note, Gemma has her eyes on a new milestone.

“I’d love to get my heavy rigid and prime mover licence. Balancing study with work is a challenge, but I’m determined to get there.”
